PRP for Hair Regeneration: Give yourself the gift of hair!
PRP (platelet rick plasma) for hair regeneration offers patients a safe, effective, non-surgical method of hair restoration. This simple procedure can dramatically improve hair density and health in both men and women.
What is platelet rick plasma (PRP)?
Produced in just a few minutes from a small amount of your own blood PRP contains a powerful mix of growth factors that can enhance tissue regeneration, healing and hair follicle growth. Its use in hair restoration is relatively new but several studies have shown it to be an exciting non-chemical, non-pharmaceutical alternative to surgery.
What types of conditions respond to this therapy?
PRP has effectively grown hair in the following patient groups:
- Male and female pattern hair loss
- Alopecia areata
- Alopecia totalis
- Eyebrow or beard hypotrichosis
- Metabolic causes of hair loss, such as mediation induced or iron deficiency.
How does the procedure work?
Blood is drawn in the office and spun in a special centrifuge. The PRP is separated from the blood. The scalp is cleaned then a local anesthesia is administered to numb the treatment area. The highly concentrated platelet rich plasma is injected by Dr. Killen. PRP is then applied topically and a microneedling device is used to further activate the PRP. The procedure takes about 90 minutes to complete.
When can I expect to see results?
Improvements in hair growth typically become most evident between 3-6 months in conjunction with the typical hair growth cycle.
Does PRP re-grow “new” hair follicles?
Unfortunately, no. PRP helps reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles, allowing the production of longer, thicker, healthier hair fibers but the only way to increase the number of hair follicles is through hair transplantation.
Can I use other medical therapies concurrently?
Absolutely. In fact, we encourage the use of many different treatment modalities, such as low level light therapy (ex: Laser Cap), Minoxidil, and DHT blockers (ex: Finesteride). We are happy to discuss all of these options with you during your consultation.
The sooner we treat your hair thinning and loss, the more hair we can save! A medical hair loss evaluation is encouraged before scheduling this procedure since not all patients are candidates for PRP hair restoration treatments.
